On February 20, 2008 at 12pm, The Black Women Playwrights’ Group, for the second year, presented The Katrina Monologues, for employees at the Bureau of National Affairs (BNA), a longtime supporter of BWPG. The event was directed by BWPG Board Member, Joan Thiel, PhD, and featured the works of BWPG members: e. christi cunningham, Jennifer Ashburn, and Debbie Minter Jackson.

Profoundly affected by the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina and the events in the days after, BWPG members took up the call to action, responding through well-crafted, dramatic personae. The Katrina Monologues explore citizens silenced by the rising waters of Lake Ponchertrain , the fear and uncertainty following the breaking of the levees, and a child’s voice praying for comfort. These stories will forever live in the consciousness of the citizens of the Gulf, the United States, and the World.
